"Osteopathic treatment aims at restoring motion and improving circulation in the musculoskeletal system. Osteopathic manipulation is distinct from chiropractic in its emphasis of the following:\r 1) Evaluation of the body’s inherent motion of the cranium, sacrum and other skeletal structures. \r 2) Evaluation and treatment of soft tissue and myofascial strains that may have accumulated through years of altered biomechanics\r 3) Emphasis on a diagnostic approach. A chiropractor often has a set protocol of manipulation and may start manipulation immediately, whereas an osteopath may spend the first 15 minutes feeling for imbalances and developing a diagnosis to develop a more individualized treatment approach\r 4) Manipulative osteopaths spend at least a half hour to an hour with each patient. A chiropractor may see a patient initially for that long, but often subsequently maintenance visits can last for five to ten minutes.\r 5) Osteopaths tend to rely on their hands, whereas chiropractos tend to be more technologically oriented, including motorized traction machines, heating pads, and other equipment.\r Dr Barbara Briner says, “I think D.O.s have many more techniques available to them. There are some very good chiropractors, but I think that, by and large, osteopathic physicians are trained to look at the whole person. So someone may come in with a headache, and we may end up treating a short leg problem as well as perhaps a flat foot.
