Chemical Peels

Chemical peels remove the outer layer of the skin using chemical solutions, like glycolic acid and phenol. Although most commonly performed on the face, this non-surgical procedure may be done on the neck and hands as well. Chemical peels can treat the following:

Age spots
Fine lines and wrinkles
Freckles
Rough skin
Sun-damaged skin
Acne

Before the procedure, a skin evaluation is done to determine which type of peel will produce the best results. Dark skin tends to respond well to light peels, while severely sun-damaged skin will likely benefit from a moderate or deep peel. Pre-treatment creams and sunscreen need to be applied every day for several weeks prior to the procedure. Doing this may help shorten the healing process.

During the peel, the area to be treated is cleaned thoroughly, and the chemical solution is applied on the skin for several minutes, which produces a stinging sensation. A neutralizing agent is then used, and the stinging sensation gradually goes away. For more intense peels, a cool compress may be placed on the area to relieve any stinging or burning, or the solution may be applied in intervals to limit exposure to the strong chemicals.

Following a light peel, there will be redness and swelling, which typically fade in a few days. Swelling after a moderate or deep peel may last for a week, and mild redness may continue for a few weeks. To help improve the final results of a peel, treated areas must be kept cool, moisturized, and protected from sunlight.

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition where the sweat glands become overactive, leading to excessive sweating. It can occur in just one area, such as the armpits, feet, or hands; or it can be general sweating over the entire body. Hyperhidrosis can happen to people of all ages and genders. It is estimated that the condition affects as many as 3% of all people, but many are never diagnosed because they are too embarrassed to talk about their symptoms with their doctor.

When excessive sweating is the main complaint and is not related to any other condition, it is called primary hyperhidrosis. There is no known cause, but it does tend to run in families. Secondary hyperhidrosis is sweating that is caused by another medical condition, such as anxiety, cancer, hyperthyroidism, or menopause. Sometimes treating the underlying condition can improve this type of sweating.

There are tests doctors can use to diagnose hyperhidrosis. One involves simply soaking up the perspiration with paper and then weighing the paper to measure how much extra sweat is being produced. Another test, called the starch-iodine test, involves covering the body with powder. This powder turns blue in any areas where sweat is produced.

Treatment depends on the severity of the hyperhidrosis and the areas affected. Some options are:

Prescription antiperspirants, which contain aluminum chloride and work by plugging the sweat ducts. This signals the sweat glands to decrease sweat production. They work for moderate cases of hyperhidrosis and are relatively affordable.
Lontophoresis, a procedure that uses small amounts of electricity and a tray of tap water to decrease production of sweat glands in the hands or feet.
Botox, which can be injected into the nerves that control sweat glands in the underarms.
Sympathectomy, a surgery for severe cases that can be performed to cut the nerves that stimulate sweat production. Sympathectomy is most effective for hyperhidrosis of the hands. It may cause new symptoms of sweating elsewhere on the body.
Surgery to remove sweat glands, most often in the underarms.

Hyperhidrosis is a serious medical condition that causes both physical and emotional distress. Treatments are available, and support groups exist to help patients cope.

Skin Issues

The skin is the largest organ in the body, protecting and covering the more sensitive inner organs. Considering its size and that it is constantly exposed to the elements, the skin is usually relatively problem-free. However that doesn't mean that issues don't come up from time to time that might need the help of a professional. The most common skin issues that people seek medical help with are cosmetic issues, acne, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and skin growths.

Professional cosmetic skin treatments exist to treat wrinkles, scars, dark spots, remove excess hair, tone and tighten skin, and otherwise improve the appearance of the skin. They may use lasers, light therapy, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or many other forms of skin treatment.

Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, most commonly on the face or back. The clogged follicles can then become infected and inflamed. Treatments include antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and retinoid creams.

Eczema is dry, sensitive skin that causes an itchy red rash, often in response to specific triggers. It is common in childhood but can sometimes last into adulthood. The main treatment involves keeping skin well moisturized.

Dermatitis is the medical name for any kind of skin inflammation or rash. Rashes can happen because of an allergy or contact with an irritating substance. They may be red, itchy, or even painful. They are often treated with antihistamines or moisturizing creams containing cortisone.

Psoriasis is patches of thick, red skin that is covered in silvery scales. It is often itchy and sore. Psoriasis is thought to be caused by an immune disorder, and it runs in families. Psoriasis is not contagious. There is no cure, but there are medicated creams available to treat the symptoms.

Skin growths, including warts and moles, are usually not serious. However, some skin growths should be examined by a doctor to make sure they don't cause problems in the future. Warts are harmless, rough, bumpy growths caused by a viral infection. They occur most often on the hands and feet. Because they are caused by a virus, they are contagious. Moles are brown or black spots that are sometimes raised slightly from the surface of the skin. They happen when clumps of pigment cells form in a cluster instead of spread out. Moles are harmless except that they are more vulnerable to cancer than other parts of the skin. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and its risk increases with sun exposure and fair skin tone.

Skin issues can be embarrassing or irritating, but most are minor and can be treated without serious problems. Some, however, can be a sign of a more significant issue, so it is important to see a doctor for anything out of the ordinary.

I appreciate Dr. Meyer and value his advice which is why I come back time and again for an ongoing chronic medical condition. It is incurable but also not deadly. It requires maintenance drugs that could have harsh side effects. Dr, Meyer checks on me regularly and helps me from triggering uncomfortable outbursts. I am clear of symptoms and maintaining by following his advice.I appreciate how at the end of an appointment we make my next appointment as getting appointments anywhere is difficult with wait times can be a couple of months out. I was referred and the earliest I could book an appointment to the referral is in October, which means I will suffer until then with the hope that when I see the referral doctor in October that those symptoms will be addressed and hopefully put at bay. That's a long time but I get it, that it is the system.I did not give Dr. Meyer a 10 rating for referral, because I do not refer my doctors. I want to make sure I have access and if he has so many patients that I unable in to see him quickly is a bad thing for me. So, the demerit is not for Dr. Meyer but for the system.

Dr. Meyer is very professional and friendly but sometimes I feel like he is on a time clock. This doesn't surprise me since I know hospitals and their off site offices are run this way now. Dr. Meyer and I are both aware that my medical problem will never go away but can only be controlled. I feel he is doing the very best he can during the time he is allowed. I believe he communicates with me very well and answers my questions. I could sometimes use more time than is allowed by Swedish but Dr. Meyer still does a better job at helping me than some of the private practices that don't have time limits, just doctors that don't want to spend that time with you. I would rather see him than the ones I left.

Dr. Anthony Meyer is such a wonderful doctor! He's extremely knowledgeable, brilliant in his field, and explains everything to you in a perfect way! Dr. Meyer is a legend in his field of work, so I feel at ease with any procedure done by him! Dr. Meyer is a sweetheart with a heart of an angel! He also loves cats like me). I'd recommend Dr. Meyer to anyone one million percent! We need more experienced kind physicians like Dr. Meyer! He's the best of the best!!!!! Swedish is lucky to have Dr. Meyer!!!! Dr. Meyer and his team are always courteous, professional and attentive. They are extremely efficient, yet take the necessary time to listen and address any issues. And in fact on this last visit, I expressed my concern that my daughter has a worrisome looking mole but she wasn't able to make an appointment until December because she was being considered a new patient although she's seen Dr. Meyer years ago. Dr. Meyer immediately instructed his staff to book an earlier appointment with her and they had already called her before I even returned home. Dr. Meyer is fabulous doctor and he has a well trained team to support him.

Dr. Meyer is tops in his field, yet I suspect his patient caseload plus working for an insurance company can put him a bit behind. I appreciate how understanding and empathetic he is, always explaining in full detail what I need to know about my condition. One thing I should mention - which I did in my last survey for Dr. Meyer - is that his note-taking assistant needs to put more thought into how she relates to patients, namely how to act cordial. Even just a smile would help rather than an icy look. That's just my take on it.

I enjoyed interacting with Dr. Meyer. We did not have time to review all the skin concerns I had. I think your clinic should work on a process so that you can more accurately determine how much time is needed to address all the issues a patient faces. While I understand doctors are under pressure to quickly move from patient to patient, I worry that a little of the "care" feeling is diminished by such brief interactions.Having said that, I was amazed by how much we accomplished in such a short amount of time.

It was very hard to get this appointment. I returned from living in Mexico for six months five days b4 the appt just to see Dr. Meyer after not seeing him for two years because of the wait time to get this appointment. Dr. Meyer is very thorough and focused. He had a set amount of time to spend with me and that was it. I had the feeling like I always do that he is rushing from one patient to the next. I hope I can find a dermatologist in Mexico. I am sick of the rushed medical care in the USA.

Each time I had a dermotology exam, MD Meyer has been thorough, concerned of my body's skin and blemishes, was thorough and described the moles, etc and stated if they were normal and benign etc. I have one large black growth that I wanted him to see, and he assured me it was ok but if it, or anything else became a problem ir concern, to contact his office again. He puts his patient's health and concerns first and is quite reputable. I highly suggest him for dermatology appoinmentts!

Dr. Meyer is the best dermatologist I have ever had in Seattle. By that I mean I've gone through a few dermatologists and none of them seemed to interested or knowledgeable about my exzema and the sypmptoms of the diagnosis. Dr. Meyer has sent me in for allergy tests, tried everything he knows about that can help control my flares. I haven't had a flare in over a year now. I won't see any other dermatologist.
