If you go to this office for your annual preventative exam, it will require three visits. The first is to meet you and take your blood sample and do a basic health evaluation like checking your lungs, blood pressure, etc. The second visit is to review your bloodwork. The third is to have the actual exam.
They are not located on Main Street, so it is a hike to get to them. I will say that they did let me do the second visit over the phone.

At the outset, this actually seemed to make sense. It is the billing practices that really are not acceptable. They will not bill it as preventive maintenance, so when you would normally see the doctor for an annual visit for free (assuming that your plan covers preventive maintenance at 100%), it is no longer free.
If you are in a high deductible plan, the costs go directly to your deductible.
The first visit was billed as "New Patient" - not covered as preventive medicine.
In addition, the purpose of the annual checkup is to make sure that everything is okay. I did not have high cholesterol, but they found it in my blood work. So, they billed that as diagnostic and again it is not covered at 100%.
I understand if there are additional visits related to the medical condition that would be billed as diagnostic, but not the annual checkup (where the high cholesterol was identified).

This includes how they send the claim to the laboratory, so you are paying for that as well.

Overall, I didn't even get to the third visit and it was already almost $500 out of pocket for me.

It would have minimal impact on the doctor's office because they get paid either way, but Aetna and my employer are not allowed to change the billing codes even if they agree that it seems like preventive maintenance. Overall, major disincentive to get your annual preventive care done!
