Beyond direct patient care, Dr. Zhou is a passionate advocate, dedicated to educating fellows, fellow physicians, and emergency room staff about the realities of living with sickle cell disease. He actively champions initiatives to reduce excessive wait times and improve the quality of care in the emergency department (ED) when adult patients are experiencing a pain crisis. Many individuals with sickle cell disease regrettably know what it's like to arrive at the ED in agonizing pain, only to be met with misunderstanding or skepticism, he says. My primary purpose is to help people effectively manage their pain and other aspects of living with sickle cell disease. It's rewarding to be a trusted resource, someone patients can speak with honestly, and who truly understands their concerns.
