Anemia

Anemia is the most common blood disorder. It occurs when the body does not have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to the tissues. Blood loss, insufficient red blood cell production, and red blood cell destruction are the three main causes of anemia. These issues may arise from such conditions as iron deficiency, heavy periods, ulcers, kidney disease, as well as some forms of cancer.

An individual with anemia will have the following symptoms: shortness of breath, weakness, dizziness, cold hands or feet, paleness, and irritability. Anemia is diagnosed when blood tests show low counts for hemoglobin, which is the protein responsible for carrying oxygen to different tissues throughout the body.

Treatments for anemia are dependent on the kind of anemia an individual has. For example, iron supplementation may correct iron deficiency anemia. For anemia caused by chronic kidney failure, chemotherapy treatments, and HIV/AIDS, a group of medications called erythropoiesis-stimulating agents may be prescribed.

Musculoskeletal Problems

The musculoskeletal system refers collectively to the bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and nerves. It is what gives the body structure and movement. Because this system encompasses so much of the body, musculoskeletal problems are extremely varied and can happen almost anywhere. There are musculoskeletal problems that affect only the joints, those that affect the bones, those that affect tendons and ligaments, and those that can happen in any area of the body but cause pain and numbness.

Joint problems include bursitis and arthritis. Bursitis is the inflammation of a fluid-filled sac cushion on the outside of a joint, causing symptoms including pain and swelling. Arthritis is the inflammation and damage of a joint due to wear and tear or disease. There are several treatments for arthritis, but if the damage progresses far enough, joint replacement may be necessary. In joint replacement, a metal or plastic implant is surgically placed within the joint to make movement easier.

Bone problems include scoliosis, fractures, and osteoporosis. Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine, making the normally straight spine look like a 'C' or 'S.' It is treated with braces or surgery. Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to weaken and break easily. It's most common in women, especially older women. Fully half of all women over 65 have osteoporosis. Fractures are any break in the bone. They can be a simple crack or a severe and complicated shatter. Osteoporosis causes fractures in people who have it, but other causes are trauma (such as a fall) or overuse.

Tendon and ligament problems most often result from injury or overuse. Two good examples are ligament tears and tendonitis. The most common ligament tear is the ACL tear in the knee. This ligament supports and stabilizes the knee and is most often torn during sports activities. Tendonitis happens when a tendon, which connects muscles and bones together, becomes irritated and inflamed. This happens most often in older patients who push their bodies too far, leading to pain and swelling. Treatment for both tendon and ligament problems usually includes rest, ice, and supporting the area to let it heal.

Pain and numbness problems can be caused by overuse, disease, an injury, or a compressed nerve. Lower back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome are two of the most common conditions patients encounter. Lower back pain may be caused by sore muscles that have been overworked, or an injury to the disks separating the vertebrae in the spine. Lower back pain usually goes away on its own within a few days, but it may require medical treatment depending on the cause. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the nerve at the base of the palm becomes trapped or pinched. Symptoms include tingling, pain, numbness, or weakness in the hand. Treatment involves rest and sometimes steroid injections.

Because the musculoskeletal system involves so much of the body, problems here can be incredibly varied in their type and severity. Some musculoskeletal problems will go away on their own or only require rest, while others may require medication, physical therapy, or even surgery.

Thrombocytopenia (Low Platelet Count)

Thrombocytopenia is a disorder where people have too few platelets. With too few platelets in the bloodstream, the blood is unable to properly clot. People with thrombocytopenia may experience prolonged external and internal bleeding. Large purple bruises (ecchymoses) and small red skin spots (petechiae) in the skin and mouth are common in those with thrombocytopenia. Other symptoms of the disorder include bleeding gums, blood in bodily fluids, and fatigue. Thrombocytopenia most often arises from a different condition or treatment, such as alcoholism, autoimmune disease, cancer treatments, viruses (such as Hepatitis C and HIV), bone marrow diseases (such as leukemia and aplastic anemia), enlarged spleen, and exposure to toxic chemicals. In rare cases, thrombocytopenia is inherited.

If a doctor suspects a patient has a thrombocytopenia, a complete blood count (CBC) or platelet count test helps determine the concentration of platelets in a person's blood at a given time. Thrombocytopenia can be diagnosed by hematologists using advanced tests on platelet samples. Flow cytometry tests detect abnormalities by evaluating the characteristics of a platelet sample using targeted lasers and lights.

Treatments for low platelet counts include steroids like Prednisone, that can assist with platelet production. If a patient's low platelet count is caused by spleen problems, spleen removal (splenectomy) may be recommended. To treat the prolonged bleeding caused by thrombocytopenia, doctors frequently prescribe Dempressin, a hormone that promotes blood clotting. Antifibrinolytic medications such as tranexamic acid may also aid in the promotion of clotting and the prevention of bleeding. For patients with severe platelet disorders (either low platelet count and dysfunctional platelets), blood transfusions may be prescribed. Platelet blood transfusions deliver donated platelets to patients intravenously, replenishing the volume of functioning platelets.

Patients can also modify their lifestyle to better manage their disorder and minimize complications. Patients with low blood counts should avoid blood-thinning medications, alcohol, and activities that could lead to injury. Many people with thrombocytopenia can live healthy and fulfilling lives with proper treatment and precautions.

I can't say enough good things about Dr Eileen Johnston. I just pray for her and all of the nurses and staff that they are as appreciated as they should be. I know that their jobs can't be easy and I just am beyond thankful for everything that she and her staff have done for me. I have been coming there for my care for a few years now and I am so grateful for Dr Johnson and the incredible care that she has provided me. Please know how truly incredible that she is. Dr. Johnston is very knowledgeable, kind, and treats me with respect. Dr Johnston is one of the few, if only Medical providers that I trust implicitly. Not that the others are not good, however she transcends good. This is somthing I do not take lightly as my opinion of the medical profession, as a whole has diminished substantially in the last decade. Not to be misinterpreted. My other Swedish providers are an excellent well caring team, and I would not change them. Howwever, Dr Johnston is the one provider who's opinion I value above all

She is amazing. First Dr to try and solve ongoing problem as I was juggled between 2 hospitals and Rehab with no primary dr. She persevered on her quest for answers and finally working with other doctors found a prescription I was taking should have stopped months ago. And every week her office calls ne to give me updates and directions for my blood issues. She is truly. Concerned with the patient, you know you have her attention and commitment. Amazing!

Dr Johnston is excellent. She remembered when I saw her last year that I was anemic and noticed I still was. I told her nothing came of it and I forgot about it. She told me she was also a hematologist and seeing my numbers couldn't just ignore it. We're in the process of trying to find out what's wrong. I went to her for my yearly oncology appointment so she didn't have to go the extra mile but I appreciate that she did!!

I've been coming yearly to this clinic for routine oncology check ups since 2015. This clinic has ALWAYS provided excellent care from the receptionist at the front desk to my visit with my Dr and another receptionist making sure I had my following year appt. They've always been thorough, kind, patient and respectful. I'll never go elsewhere unless they're no longer contracted with my current insurance. Thanks for asking

Dr. Johnson is exceptional. She provides outstanding care and takes the time to explain test results and their meaning. She listens carefully whenever I say something even if it is inane, which is probably more often than I'd like to admit. She is surrounded by an excellent staff from the receptionist, technicians, and the scheduler. I appreciate the health care experience that I usually receive at the clinic.

Dr Johnston is very professional and caring and provides me with what I need for my condition. I look forward to seeing her and always leave with a good feeling, I trust her judgment because she knows what she is doing, my case is very complicated and she manages all the steps very carefully. She is an amazing doctor and I have dealt with many over my 82 years. She is exceptional and I love her for that.

My Oncologist, Dr Johnston, is very attentive and always ready to explain medical results of my ongoing condition! She always sets my mind at ease on the things that I'm concerned about! Truthfully, I never would consider changing my Oncologist! She is very kind, considerate, but tells me of my condition in a way that I can understand! She has been my Dr for the past 8-9 years! She is phenomenal!

This office from the receptionist to the doctor are always friendly and courteous. When you enter the receptionists are smiling, the blood draw people are so kind, the nurses in the doctor's office make you feel welcome and understand you may be hurting. The doctor Is so kind and understand and does explain everything you need to know. I would recommend this office to anyone.
