Musculoskeletal Problems

The musculoskeletal system refers collectively to the bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and nerves. It is what gives the body structure and movement. Because this system encompasses so much of the body, musculoskeletal problems are extremely varied and can happen almost anywhere. There are musculoskeletal problems that affect only the joints, those that affect the bones, those that affect tendons and ligaments, and those that can happen in any area of the body but cause pain and numbness.

Joint problems include bursitis and arthritis. Bursitis is the inflammation of a fluid-filled sac cushion on the outside of a joint, causing symptoms including pain and swelling. Arthritis is the inflammation and damage of a joint due to wear and tear or disease. There are several treatments for arthritis, but if the damage progresses far enough, joint replacement may be necessary. In joint replacement, a metal or plastic implant is surgically placed within the joint to make movement easier.

Bone problems include scoliosis, fractures, and osteoporosis. Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine, making the normally straight spine look like a 'C' or 'S.' It is treated with braces or surgery. Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to weaken and break easily. It's most common in women, especially older women. Fully half of all women over 65 have osteoporosis. Fractures are any break in the bone. They can be a simple crack or a severe and complicated shatter. Osteoporosis causes fractures in people who have it, but other causes are trauma (such as a fall) or overuse.

Tendon and ligament problems most often result from injury or overuse. Two good examples are ligament tears and tendonitis. The most common ligament tear is the ACL tear in the knee. This ligament supports and stabilizes the knee and is most often torn during sports activities. Tendonitis happens when a tendon, which connects muscles and bones together, becomes irritated and inflamed. This happens most often in older patients who push their bodies too far, leading to pain and swelling. Treatment for both tendon and ligament problems usually includes rest, ice, and supporting the area to let it heal.

Pain and numbness problems can be caused by overuse, disease, an injury, or a compressed nerve. Lower back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome are two of the most common conditions patients encounter. Lower back pain may be caused by sore muscles that have been overworked, or an injury to the disks separating the vertebrae in the spine. Lower back pain usually goes away on its own within a few days, but it may require medical treatment depending on the cause. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the nerve at the base of the palm becomes trapped or pinched. Symptoms include tingling, pain, numbness, or weakness in the hand. Treatment involves rest and sometimes steroid injections.

Because the musculoskeletal system involves so much of the body, problems here can be incredibly varied in their type and severity. Some musculoskeletal problems will go away on their own or only require rest, while others may require medication, physical therapy, or even surgery.

Had a follow up appointment with Dr. Argentar at MedStar following a wrist fracture. His medical assistant was cheerful and helpful. I had a brief visit with him to visit new x rays. He confirmed that I would not need surgery and provided me with a flexible waterproof cast much more comfortable than my original splint. Visit was efficient and he answered all of my questions. I had a positive experience and felt him to be more engaged and warmer than in my limited experience with other types of specialists.

Dr. Argintar came into the room like a whirlwind with his 2 interns. His energy was so high as if he had too much caffeine and/or cocaine.
He was speaking so fast that I barely could process what he was saying to me. I did not feel heard or seen. He spent 5 minutes with me.

After the interns were in the room, he asked me if it was okay for them to be there. That put me in an uncomfortable position.

It was my first appt with him. He was already leaving a bad impression on me. The interns should not be in the room before he asked.
Having them there is as if he’s shoving them down my throat. I feel, I don’t have a choice, but to say yes to his request.
I’ve been to other clinics, before the Interns show up, the care provider. That Is respectful to the patient. And truly what consent Is.

I have been dealing with this left knee pain for years. And lately, I feel it has been deteriorating based on my routine current usage. I’m feeling more pain.

What he read in the chart and what I could express, he replied so fast. I heard some words. And processed what I could.

I hardly could even speak what was happening with me because he interrupted me and finished my sentences.
I could not explain myself at my pace. I was rushed by him. The whole appt felt rushed.
As I said, it was 5 min. I timed from the time he walked in to the time he walked out.

He then told me, I shouldn’t be concerned because my pain is normal for a “young woman of my age.”
This is actually really dismissive. I had at least 2 traumas happen on this knee.
My primary recommended I see an orthopedic surgeon since the radiologist noted there was fluid in the X-ray.
Argintar stated, you can’t see fluid In an X-ray. So now Im getting mixed messages, but no explanation.

I am dealing with pain. It’s not about my age. His dismissive words is one way malpractice suits are born. I live In my body. I know when things are shifting and worsening. I feel the tension and pain. He doesn’t. That’s why I came In.

He then had me lay on my right side while he rotated my left leg out and back. He said, he “gives my hamstring ability a B+, and IT band a C-. He had me stand up and he put both hands on my hips and said, “they are at least strong. And now I’ll stop Insulting you.”
I think he was attempting a joke, but I was not amused. I was confused.

I feel I made a terrible mistake choosing Argintar. It was not a quality or good experience. I will not come back. And I have had a few not-so-great experiences with MedStar, I will seek another institution for my medical care.
Argintar’s “care” was unacceptable.
