Asthma

Asthma is a chronic lung disease where the tissue and airways of the lungs become extremely sensitive to certain substances. When these substances are breathed in, the lungs become inflamed. The muscles around the airways tighten and squeeze the lungs, and passages within the lungs swell and tighten. The airways themselves produce mucus, which further clogs the tightened, swollen airways. A person having an asthma attack finds it very difficult to breathe, and a severe attack can even be fatal.

Asthma affects people of all ages, but people with asthma are most often diagnosed as children. Symptoms can include wheezing, a tight feeling in the chest, shortness of breath, and coughing. Some people have mild symptoms all the time, and some people have no symptoms at all, but everyone with asthma is susceptible to occasional severe attacks or flare-ups of symptoms when they are exposed to triggers. Triggers vary widely but can include:

Allergens (dust mites, pet fur, mold, pollen, grass)
Irritants (smoke, pollution, dust, chemicals)
Viral infections
Physical activity, especially outdoors
Certain medications or chemicals in foods (aspirin, sulfites)

Treatment for most asthma patients involves three steps. Patients learn what their asthma triggers are and avoid them. They take a daily control medication, usually an inhaled corticosteroid, to reduce inflammation in the lungs. Also, they have rescue medication with them at all times to take in case of a severe attack. These quick-acting inhaled medications relax the muscles around the airways and allow the lungs to open up for air.

There is no cure for asthma, but with treatment it should not interfere with daily life and activities.

All very good things, Dr. Patel one on one, I felt his concerns for me, I felt his compassion, I was reassured with positive reactions and I felt the confidence he had within his self for me and that reinforced my thoughts helping me to get through the news of my new condition of an illness and the attitude I needed to deal with my upcoming treatments and procedures assuring me I was going to get through this as his attitude was genuine and positive making me feel secure with him, his wisdome and knowledge and how he presented this information to me made me feel confident and ready to move forward without worry. I was extremely impressed with the care I received from Dr. Patel. He had all my relevant medical records going back many years and thoroughly discussed my present situation and his diagnosis. Before leaving, he thoroughly explained his plan of action in treating me and provided me with the appropriate tools/information to begin treatment at home. He then scheduled me for a more involved medical procedure that will be accomplished within a month.Overall, I was very happy with my visit and Dr. Patel's level of expertise. And, he has a wonderful "beside manner!

I am 65yo All my medical issues are new to me, I did not even have any medical check ups or exams or illnesses. It all started with Kidney pain and ER visit. And now I must address what ER visit has uncovered. So it is all new to me. I don't know if you realize just how valuable Dr Jiten Patel really is he saved my life between 10 or 12 years ago. He is always top shelf in every way possible. I would rather cut my right hand off than change from Doc Patel's care. He is a man who is caring, genuine, and so knowledgeable that it's almost scary. Dr Patel is excellent. I'd heard great things about him from others and they were proven correct. Last pulmonologist left me hanging on a cause of my cough. Dr Patel dove right in. Only complaints' are admin ones. Took months for an appointment and now 3 months wait for a test he's ordered. All staff have been personable and professional.
