Subcutaneous Allergen Immunotherapy (Allergy Shots)

Also known as allergy shots, subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy is a treatment in which gradually increasing doses of an allergen are injected under the skin. An allergen is a substance that can bring about an allergic reaction. Pollen, dust mites, and pet dander are the most common examples of these substances. When patients receive an allergy shot, their body produces "blocking" antibodies that decrease the immune system's sensitivity to an allergen, thus reducing their symptoms.

Before treatment is begun, patients and their doctors first have to identify different factors that trigger their symptoms. Then, skin tests are done to confirm which substances cause allergic reactions. Blood tests may be performed as well, but they are typically not necessary.

There are two phases to subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy: a build-up phase and a maintenance phase. The build-up phase lasts three to six months, during which patients receive shots with increasing amounts of the allergens once or twice a week. When the effective dose is reached, the maintenance phase begins and may continue for up to five years.

Although allergy shots are the longest-lasting and most effective allergy treatment available, they are not for everyone. If patients have heart problems, high blood pressure, or severe asthma, they should not be given allergy shots. The injections are generally safe, but they may have a little swelling at the injection site, which is normal. Rarely, severe shock-like reactions, called anaphylaxis, can also occur. Patients will likely be required by their doctor to stay for half an hour after their shot, so in the event of an anaphylactic reaction, it can be treated immediately.

Staff and the doctor were friendly, efficient and considerate. The doctor explained clearly the tests and the reasons for them, as well as a brief explanation of the effects of aging on allergies. Nice guy. My only minor gripe is with the 6 month length of time between scheduling and the first available appointment. For me, this was not an issue as the allergy testing was non-urgent, but that does seem like an extraordinary amount of time for a patient with more immediate concerns.

The provider is very knowledgeable. He stated his opinion based on the norms he has experienced in his practice. I was expecting other results from the testing but the provider was very frank in saying that my symptoms were not caused by an allergic reaction. This was troubling and comforting at the same time. Troubling because I had limited many items from my diet based on a blood test given 4 years prior. Comforting because my food restrictions were instantly removed.

My only negative was the long wait to get an appointment as a new patient. That's not Dr. Knudsen's fault. Or Swedish even. Just how it goes for specialists. Also, my only reason for a 9 and not a 10 is that I had a long drive to the office. So that impacted *my* experience but is hardly an indictment of Knudsen or Swedish. Overall this was a great interaction and Knudsen having looked through my history before I got there was great and really streamlined everything.

Dr. Knutson and his staff have been wonderful. When I email with a question, I receive a response during the same day or at latest, the following morning. If Dr. Knutson is not available then a staff member will respond. During visits, everyone has been kind and courteous. Follow-up is prompt (example: prescription refills). I have recommended this practice to others as a result of the service provided.

Dr. Knudsen was clear, concise and responsive in asking questions of me and giving answers to my questions. He explained what he thought we should do to make a proper diagnosis of my symptoms, and it was all accomplished quickly and with a recommendation for a new medication to address my problem.
