Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac catheterization is a procedure done to check on the health of the heart. A tiny, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel through a very small opening, usually in the groin, and threaded through the blood vessel up to the heart. Once the catheter is in place, it can diagnose problems in the heart and perform certain corrective procedures.

A coronary catheter can be used to:

Take blood samples
Inject dye for an angiogram
Check for valve defects
Measure oxygen and pressure levels within the heart chambers
Take a biopsy
Perform a percutaneous coronary intervention, or procedure to clear blocked arteries
Widen narrowed valve openings

Because all of this can be accomplished without the need for open surgery, cardiac catheterization has become a popular option.

Heart Attack

A heart attack is a serious medical event that happens when the blood supplying oxygen to the heart is cut off, usually because of a blockage in an artery. This results in damage or death of part of the heart muscle. The heart can heal, but like any part of the body that was injured it leaves a scar. This scar tissue does not contract effectively, so the ability of the heart to pump is lowered after a heart attack.

A heart attack, sometimes called a myocardial infarction, can happen without warning. However there are certain factors that raise the risk of heart attack. Some of these are:

Age
Gender (most heart attack sufferers are male)
A family history of heart attacks
Smoking
Obesity
High cholesterol
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Unhealthy lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, poor diet, too much alcohol or stress)

Heart attacks typically feel like pain or pressure in the chest that can radiate out to the back, arm, or jaw. Some other symptoms can include fatigue or weakness, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.

Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the heart muscle by opening up blocked blood vessels. Medications are sometimes used to dissolve clots in the arteries. Aspirin and other medications such as Plavix can thin the blood and make clots less likely to form. Dilators can widen blood vessels to make room for more blood to flow. Doctors can also use a procedure called catheterization to look at the blood vessels around the heart directly, place stents, or widen vessels using angioplasty. In extreme cases bypass surgery can be used to help blood flow better. After recovery, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications in order to protect the heart.

Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

Dr Ball is a very good doctor. He knew my health background before entering the room, clearly explained my ekg in terms I understood, and answered my questions. My only complaint has nothing to do with Dr Ball, but rather in the scheduling. I'm told that appts are made only 4 months out - so I have to remember to make an appt and try to figure out when to call in for the approximate timeframe that the doctor wants. My husband is also Dr Ball's patient and has been able to see him because of scheduling. The physician assistant he HAS seen has been excellent, but having had heart surgery already, he comes away a bit concerned that he hasn't been able to see his doctor.. Other than that concern, thank you for providing patients with such wonderful, caring and qualified people.

As I have thought over the appointment I have mixed reactions to it - on one hand there was definitive information provided where previously doctors had been had been somewhat vague - this was appreciated! On the other hand, it felt like I wasting his time - my problem was overweight & underactive and my pcp was wasting resources in ordering unnecessary tests instead of any concern about why exhaustion was causing me to be underactive or why I was concerned about pains in my chest or back. One one hand I am quite happy to not need to come back for yearly check ups as previously advised on the other hand the way It was delivered felt like he thought I was there because I was pursuing unnecessary visits - spending time at the doctors is not high on my list of things to do.

I had just received potentially awful news from another provider (test result). Dr Ball was extremely supportive and considerate about putting that issue first in setting up my cardiac care. He was also supportive of my care for CKD and urged me to clear his dietary, exercise, and supplement advice with my nephrologist. He seemed to care about me, not just my numbers. For a first visit I was very impressed and grateful for his support and advice.

This provider always cares about my husband's and my overall health and quality of life, not just our heart issues. We travel from the Tri-Cities to have him as our Cardiologist because of his professionalism as well as concern for our well being and quality of life. He always takes time to make sure we are being as active as possible and enjoying our "old age." He's awesome!

We waited over six months to get this cardiology appointment. I accompanied my mom who has advanced breast cancer. Dr Timothy Ball treated my mom with respect and kindness, and we were both extremely happy with the care received and the time he took with us. The reception staff and medical assistants were very helpful.We would highly recommend Dr. Ball and this office.

Dr Ball made feel like he really cares about my health. He was very thorough and didn't make me feel like he was in a hurry. He was focused on me; I had his full attention.When I made my appointment they were booked almost 3 months out. I was put on a waitlist In case of cancellation. There was a cancellation and I got In a month earlier than my original appointment.

Dr. Ball was so thorough in gathering my medical history-both from my answers to questionnaires I filled out prior to this appt, my history with the Providence system AND the most recent tests I've had. He answered ALL my questions and effortlessly helped me deal with the stress I'm having about my recent diagnoses. He's VERY good at his job. I am impressed.

Of the hundreds of doctors I have seen in my lifetime (80yrs), I rank Dr. Ball at the very top. He was efficient, knowledgeable, and answered questions I had thoroughly, I have rarely felt so well served by any doctor in any specially. I was very impressed and would, and have already recommended Dr. Ball if they get a referral to a cardiologist.
